About Julie

The heat and pine trees of my southern upbringing influences the energy of my art making practices. I have kept a glue gun and scissors in my hand since childhood and have yet to have found better tools in my creative process. I graduated with my BFA in Studio Art in 2009 from Valdosta State University.

Currently residing in Columbus, GA with my husband, daughter and far too many house plants. My days are spent being the gallery coordinator at the Bo Bartlett Center and my evenings are none of your business. Art making happens somewhere in between.

Artist Statement

Collaging started as an elementary process in my childhood and continued to be the first brainstorming step for other art making media. Cut paper analog collages have resurfaced as my primary artmaking medium. I use discarded magazines and books to create new scenarios from combining old images with bold new ones for a story to come to life.

Focusing primarily on the female figure, the story is often revolved around her actions and identity. Working from original papers, I enjoy the risk-taking aspect of one chance to send a message with pictures. Ranging from serious to whimsical, ultimately the visual is a representation of whatever connection I have thematically to the image.

I make things with the hope of beautifying a space or processing emotion. If nothing else, to have an onlooker say, “I can do that” and encourage them to make something of their own.
